Officer in Custody Over Public Killing of Nigerian Man in Delta
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday when police operatives from the Effurun Area Command responded to a report at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
According to police accounts, the suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
However, while officers were trying to take the suspect into custody, the team leader, ASP Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of standard procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
In response, police authorities have ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police has extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He also urged citizens to remain calm as the disciplinary and legal processes continue.
