A New Era: Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha Take Over AMVCA Hosting Duties from IK Osakioduwa
After more than a decade as the face of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), IK Osakioduwa has officially stepped down, marking the end of an era for Africa’s biggest celebration of film and television.
For the first time since the awards began in 2013, a new set of hosts will take centre stage as Nigerian comedian Bovi and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha have been unveiled as co-hosts for the 12th edition taking place tonight at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
Osakioduwa’s departure represents one of the biggest shifts in the history of the AMVCA. Across 11 consecutive editions, he became closely identified with the award show, earning praise for his charisma, humour, and commanding stage presence. His long-standing role helped shape the AMVCA into one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainment events as Nollywood continued its rise on the global stage.
Organisers say the decision to introduce Bovi and Mbatha signals a fresh direction focused on humour, storytelling, and pan-African appeal. Bovi, regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading comedians, is expected to bring lively energy and spontaneity to the ceremony, while Mbatha adds international star power following acclaimed performances in Coming 2 America and Shaka iLembe.
“The AMVCA stage is one of the biggest in Africa, and I don’t take that lightly,” Bovi said after the announcement, promising viewers a night filled with “energy, laughs and magic.”
Beyond the hosting change, this year’s edition is already shaping up to be one of the fiercest competitions yet. The Herd and Gingerrr currently lead the nominations with nine nods each, while To Kill a Monkey and My Father’s Shadow remain strong contenders in major categories. Veteran actress Joke Silva will serve as head judge for the 2026 edition.
Away from the awards themselves, the AMVCA red carpet has evolved into a major cultural moment, with celebrities regularly using the platform to showcase bold African couture and daring fashion statements. Last year’s event sparked massive online reactions after standout appearances from stars like Nana Akua Addo and Pretty Mike went viral across social media, further cementing the AMVCA’s reputation as one of Africa’s biggest fashion showcases.
With a brand-new hosting duo, intense competition across major categories, and expectations of another unforgettable red carpet display, tonight’s ceremony promises a perfect blend of nostalgia and a fresh new chapter for African entertainment.
