Terror Plot Foiled: Man Pleads Guilty to Planning Attack on Taylor Swift Concert
A 21-year-old man has pleaded guilty in an Austrian court over a jihadist plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert, a threat that led to the cancellation of the Vienna leg of the global “Eras” tour in 2024.
The suspect, identified as Beran A., appeared before a court in Wiener Neustadt on Tuesday, where his lawyer confirmed he admitted to all charges except attempted murder.
The planned attack targeted a concert at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, which was expected to host thousands of fans. Authorities had uncovered the alleged plot just days before the scheduled performances, prompting the cancellation of three tour dates.
Prosecutors allege that Beran A., alongside another suspect, Arda K., and a third individual, Hasan E. — currently imprisoned in Saudi Arabia — formed a “highly dangerous” terror cell linked to the Islamic State group.
According to court testimony, Beran A. had explored ways to carry out the attack, including attempting to acquire weapons and learning how to construct a shrapnel bomb modeled on IS-style attacks. He also communicated with individuals in extremist chat groups, including a senior IS member.
However, he told the court he had not finalized a concrete plan before his arrest in August 2024, just two days before the concert. He has remained in custody since then.
“I was looking for encouragement. I liked getting attention,” he reportedly said, while also admitting he had been influenced by extremist ideology but was “afraid to die.”
Prosecutors further allege that he had considered other attacks abroad, including an attempted stabbing of security personnel in Dubai earlier in 2024. He abandoned that plan after suffering a panic attack.
The third suspect, Hasan E., is accused of carrying out a stabbing attack in Mecca that injured several people. Austrian authorities say they are monitoring his legal proceedings.
Beran A. and Arda K. are also accused of encouraging Hasan E. prior to that attack, though Beran A. denies the claim. His defense argues that he was manipulated by Hasan E., whom he met during their studies in Vienna.
The trial is expected to continue across multiple hearings until May 21. If convicted, Beran A. faces up to 20 years in prison.
The plot was ultimately foiled with the assistance of US intelligence. Following the cancellations, Taylor Swift expressed fear and regret over the situation, noting the impact on fans who had planned to attend.
In a related case, a German court previously sentenced a Syrian teenager to a suspended 18-month sentence for involvement in the same plot.
