Millie Bright Retires From Professional Football With Immediate Effect
Chelsea captain Millie Bright has officially announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 32, bringing an end to a remarkable and decorated career.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the England international revealed she is “ready to say goodbye to football,” having already stepped away from international duty in 2025.
Bright joined Chelsea in 2015 from Doncaster Belles and went on to become one of the most influential players in the club’s history. Over a 12-year spell in west London, she made a record 314 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals and winning an impressive 20 trophies, including all eight of Chelsea’s Women’s Super League titles to date.
She also holds the record for the most appearances in Women’s Super League history, surpassing the previous mark set by Jordan Nobbs. Her time at Chelsea included memorable domestic trebles in 2021 and 2025, cementing her legacy as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

Reflecting on her decision, Bright said representing Chelsea had meant everything to her, but she felt it was the right time to move on to a new chapter.
“I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way,” she said.
Chelsea confirmed that Bright will remain part of the club in a new capacity, serving as a trustee of the club’s foundation, where she will continue her off-field contributions.
On the international stage, Bright earned 88 caps for England and played a key role in the team’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 triumph. She later captained the Lionesses to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in the absence of Leah Williamson. In recognition of her contributions to football, she was awarded an OBE.
Her retirement does not come as a major surprise, as she has battled injuries and physical strain in recent seasons, limiting her appearances. Despite this, her impact on both club and country remains undeniable.
Bright’s career will be celebrated at Chelsea’s final Women’s Super League match of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on May 16.
Widely regarded as one of England’s greatest defenders, she leaves behind a legacy defined by leadership, resilience, and consistency at the highest level of the game.
