Bothroyd Slams Gyokeres Over ‘Dry Pitch’ Excuse After Arsenal Defeat
Former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd has criticized Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres following his post-match comments after the Gunners’ defeat to Bournemouth.
XCLUSIVELAND reports that Arsenal suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, a result that has sparked fresh debate over the team’s performance despite their position at the top of the Premier League table.
Bournemouth took the lead through Junior Kroupi before Gyokeres brought Arsenal level from the penalty spot. However, Alex Scott’s second-half strike sealed all three points for the visitors, leaving Arsenal frustrated in front of their home fans.
Speaking after the match, Gyokeres suggested that the dry condition of the pitch affected Arsenal’s style of play. However, Bothroyd dismissed the claim, describing it as an excuse rather than a genuine reason for the defeat.
“Listen, to me, that’s just silliness,” Bothroyd said. “I was at the game, I saw the pitch. The pitch looked perfect to me.
“The sprinklers were on before the game. They were on at half-time. Both teams actually play on that same pitch.”
The former striker insisted that Bournemouth simply made better use of their chances, while Arsenal failed to show enough attacking threat throughout the game.
He further criticized the Gunners’ overall performance, pointing to their lack of creativity and attacking intent despite dominating possession.
“Bournemouth took the opportunities when they came. You have to analyse what happened today because it was really poor,” he added.
Bothroyd also highlighted Arsenal’s low attacking output, revealing that the team recorded an expected goals (xG) of just 0.19 from open play — a statistic he believes is unacceptable for a team of their quality.
“It’s just not good enough for a team of the calibre of players that Arsenal have,” he said.
He went on to question Arsenal’s playing style, particularly their tendency to recycle possession without making meaningful progress in attack. According to Bothroyd, goalkeeper David Raya appeared to have more involvement on the ball than most outfield players, which he described as a major issue.
“Too many times they get into positions where they are just knocking the ball around. Raya is touching the ball more than anyone, and you’re still far from goal. I don’t get that,” he concluded.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal remain nine points clear at the top of the table. However, with Manchester City holding two games in hand and a crucial clash between both sides coming up next weekend, the title race remains far from decided.
All eyes will now be on that high-stakes encounter, which could play a decisive role in determining the destination of the Premier League trophy this season.
