ADC: Kachikwu-led faction announces plans for National Convention

The group led by Dumebi Kachikwu in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has said it plans to hold a national convention and set up a temporary leadership to run the party.

The group’s spokesperson, Norman Obinna, said this on Tuesday during a press conference after what he called an emergency National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Abuja.

Obinna said the meeting had state chairmen and other NEC members there, and was called to deal with the party’s leadership crisis that’s still going on.

He said one of the main things that came out of earlier Alternative Dispute Resolution, ADR, talks was an agreement that the party would hold a national convention to choose new leaders, but he said this still hasn’t happened nearly two years later.

“The main thing that came out of the ADR, which both sides signed, was that the ADC would have to hold a convention to choose new leaders. This hasn’t been done for almost two years,” he said.

According to him, the former national leadership under Ralph Nwosu tried to illegally hand over control of the party to people who weren’t even members, whilst also trying to push aside the current state chairmen.

The group said it has started two court cases questioning whether those actions were legal, even before the recent position taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Pointing to what it called the lack of a National Working Committee since August 2022, the group said the NEC is still the highest legitimate authority in the party.

Obinna listed several decisions made at the meeting, including a formal break from a rival coalition led by well-known political figures.

“We separate the ADC from David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Bolaji Abdullahi and all members of this so-called coalition. All actions taken by them in the name of the ADC do not bind the party,” he said.
