Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has opened up about how her journey as an artist has transformed her life and personality.
The 31-year-old explained that before rising to fame, she was “hyper-independent” and often pushed people away. However, her growth in the music industry has helped her become more open and emotionally expressive.
Speaking in a recent interview, Tems said being an artist forced her to confront habits that were holding her back.
“Being an artist has changed my life. There are a lot of people that know me. It made me grow, I had to shed a lot of habits that were holding me back—one of those things was my hyper-independency and the thing I do where I push people away,” she said.
She added that she has now learned to embrace love and vulnerability without feeling uncomfortable.
“I have now learned to embrace love and just be open, and be free to give love and be vulnerable without feeling odd,” she added.
Tems began her music career in 2018 after quitting her job, releasing her debut single, “Mr Rebel.” However, her big break came in 2020 with “Essence,” her collaboration with Wizkid, which gained global recognition.
Since then, she has worked with international stars including Drake, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and J. Cole, further cementing her place on the global stage.
The singer has also achieved major milestones, including winning two Grammy Awards and becoming the first Nigerian artist to surpass 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Tems continues to inspire fans worldwide with both her music and her personal growth story.
